Best Chimichurri Recipes

Simple, refreshing, and indulgent all in one, this is one of the best chimichurri recipes you’ll find. It takes no time at all and once you put it with your steak, chicken, pork, or veggies, you will wonder why you missed out for so long. But thanks to its simplicity, you can make up for lost time!

Easy Chimichurri Recipe

With just 7 ingredients, this easy chimichurri sauce takes 10 minutes from start to finish. You can whip it up while the meats are cooking, though I do like to get it ready a bit before then so the flavors really come together.

Chimichurri sauce ingredients

Chimichurri Ingredients

  • Flat-leaf parsley – Make sure it’s fresh. You’ll also want to firmly pack only the leaves when you measure it out.
  • Garlic – Fresh garlic cloves give chimichurri its signature pungent zip. I use 5 and that’s plenty, though adding one or two more cloves won’t hurt.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – Adds to the richness of the sauce.
  • Dried oregano – Helps sweeten the flavor slightly.
  • Red wine vinegar – Brings in the necessary acidity.
  • Red pepper flakes – You can adjust the amount to make it more or less spicy, depending on your taste.
  • Black pepper – Just a pinch is perfect!

Expert Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Chimichurri Every Time

  • Get your parsley the day you make it. Because it needs to be fresh, you want it to be at the pinnacle of perfection.
  • And measure that parsley out. It’s what makes chimichurri green and beautiful, but if you don’t get the ratio right, it could lead to a more bitter flavor.
  • Choose quality extra virgin olive oil. Think the kind you could just drizzle onto hunks of bread and devour.
  • Avoid those parsley stems. If you add them in, it will make your sauce bitter.
What is chimichurri sauce made of

What is chimichurri sauce made of?

Chimichurri sauce is made using flat-leaf parsley, fresh garlic, dried oregano, extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, red pepper flakes, and black pepper.

What is chimichurri used for?

Typically, Argentinian chimichurri is used as a condiment most commonly used on grilled meats. But you can use it in so many more ways than just chimichurri steak. We love it on roasted potatoes, pasta, and rice. It’s also wonderful on salads and sandwiches.

What does chimichurri sauce taste like?

Chimichurri is a bit pungent yet tangy. It’s refreshing thanks to the parsley, giving it an earthy feel that works so well with meats.

Is chimichurri spicy hot?

Chimichurri should have a little heat to it, but you can adjust the amount of spice to your liking with the red pepper flakes. Add more if you like spicy, and add less if you don’t.

What is the difference between pesto and chimichurri

What is the difference between pesto and chimichurri?

While both use olive oil and are green, pesto uses basil, garlic, pecorino cheese, and pine nuts. Chimichurri has red wine vinegar, parsley, garlic, and red pepper flakes which give it a tangy taste instead.

Do you use parsley stems in chimichurri?

No, don’t use the stems in your chimichurri. It will make the sauce more bitter.

What can I use instead of chimichurri?

There’s really nothing like chimichurri but if you can’t make it yourself, you can use salsa verde for a bit of a tangy, saucy experience.

Why is my chimichurri bitter

Why is my chimichurri sauce bitter?

Be careful when using the food processor with the extra virgin olive oil. You only want to just blend it together. Over-mixing can make it bitter. So too can adding the parsley stems. And if you don’t measure out the parsley properly, you could put in too much, upsetting the balance and leading to a bitter batch.

How do you make chimichurri less bitter?

Don’t over-mix the olive oil in the food processor and don’t use the parsley stems. Also, getting the ratio of parsley right like in this recipe will ensure the parsley’s natural bitter tendencies don’t override the flavor.

What does Chimichurri go well with?

I love serving chimichurri with skirt steak though I’ve put it with all cuts of steak, grilled chicken, roasted pork tenderloin, and even oven-roasted potatoes. My kids will ladle it on top of rice too. Leftovers are wonderful to take sandwiches to the next level. You can probably eat your own hand if you smothered it with chimichurri!

Homemade chimichurri sauce recipe

How to Store Chimichurri

Chimichurri should be stored in the fridge in an airtight vessel. The first time you make it, you might not have any left because it’s so good. But next time, make more and put it in the fridge.

How Long Does Chimichurri Last in the Fridge?

In your fridge, this chimichurri sauce recipe lasts for a week. After that, you’ll need to freeze it.

Should you refrigerate chimichurri sauce?

Yes, chimichurri needs to be kept in the refrigerator. It will be fine on the table for serving though.

Can You Freeze Chimichurri?

Yes! So make a ton! I like to pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it first, then dump it into a freezer bag. It’s so much easier this way. It will be good for up to 3 months in the freezer.

How to Reheat Chimichurri?

No need to heat it! Chimichurri that was frozen can simply be thawed in the fridge overnight.

If you buy the canned chickpeas, you will not need to cook them. If you bought dry chickpeas and you don’t have time to soak them overnight in cold water, you can boil them for 30 minutes on the stove top with some baking soda to help breakdown the chickpea skins, cool them, and then they will be ready. Alternatively, you can use a pressure cooker to cook them as well.

If your hummus tastes bitter, you’re not using enough tahini or using the right brand. You can always make this hummus recipe without tahini, but tahini is what makes it authentic to traditional hummus.

What can be used instead of tahini in hummus?

You can make homemade hummus without tahini. Replace it with any nut butter such as cashew or almond. Sunflower seed butter is a nice replacement for tahini. Sesame oil and sesame seeds may be used instead of hummus as well.

Which tahini is best for hummus?

Joyva Sesame Tahini is what I used in this recipe. It’s salty and savory, perfect for a traditional hummus recipe.

What to Serve with Hummus?

Pita bread or chips are always a good thing to scoop up creamy hummus with. You can also cut up fresh veggies like carrots, celery, cucumbers, and bell peppers to dunk into your homemade hummus. Try using your hummus on sandwiches and in wraps too for a healthier way to bring them together.

How to Store Hummus?

You’ll need to keep your homemade hummus refrigerated. Use a good airtight container and you can count on it for about 4 to 7 days. You can also freeze hummus if you keep it in a heavy-duty freezer bag.

Can you freeze hummus?

Yes, you can freeze hummus. Just put it in an airtight container that is freezer-safe. Don’t fill it all the way to the top either since it will expand during the freezing process.

Best Guacamole Recipe

You’ll love this classic guacamole recipe because it’s going to be your go-to when your guac cravings strike. It’s perfect for game-day, for holiday or family gatherings, snack time, or to accompany your Mexican night at home.

Easy Guacamole Recipe

This super simple guacamole recipe is easy to make and this will show you just how easy it is to make homemade guacamole with just a handful of ingredients. You will never buy that pre-made glop from the store ever again! Now go pick up a few pounds of avocados and lets get started!

What is traditional guacamole?

A Mexican guacamole recipe is simply defined as mashed avocado with fresh ingredients. As such, traditional guacamole can vary by recipe as everyone seems to have their own way of making it.

Guacamole ingredients

Guacamole Ingredients

  • Haas avocados – You can’t have guac without them! Hass avocados at room temperature are the best avocados for good guacamole.
  • Lime – As mentioned, it keeps it from turning brown and also adds great zesty flavor!
  • Red onion – Perfectly pungent without being overpowering.
  • Serrano or jalapeno peppers – Guacamole needs a hint of spice, even if you keep it mild. If you love spicy guacamole, just add a bit more pepper.
  • Fresh cilantro – This delightful herb is the key to making authentic guacamole!

How to pick ripe avocados?

The ripening process for avocados is fairly simple. Look for that bulbous end of your avocado. It should give way to firm pressure. Also, make sure that brown stem piece is still intact. Otherwise it will let air into the avocado and it will get overripe. This might not be a big deal if you’re going to make guacamole as soon as you get home, but if you’re waiting a day or two, it will be.

The Best Way to Cut an Avocado

You’ll want to cut your avocado lengthwise. The pit will be easier to pop out. Then you can scoop out the flesh with a spoon onto your cutting board and chunk it up.

How do You Make Guacamole from Scratch

The key to perfect guacamole from scratch is:

  • Finely dice – the ingredients should be in little pieces so you’re not getting giant chunks.
  • Lime juice – this keeps the avocados from turning brown and adds a authentic flavor boost.
  • Control your spice – peppers can add zing without spice if you watch the seeds.
  • Make it less watery – I don’t mind, but if you want your guacamole with a pastier texture, keep the tomato seeds and pulp out of it.

Expert Tips and Tricks for Guacamole Success!

  • Use ripe avocados – If they aren’t ready yet, they will have a weird texture and flavor. And too ripe means they will have that weird lipstick-like taste. Yuck!
  • Keep it chunky – Some people make guacamole blended but it’s more authentic with chunks of the fresh ingredients in every bite. Chunky guac is more authentic and adds texture.
  • Use fresh ingredients for flavor – You *could* use dried or powdered seasonings but fresh garlic, peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro make the taste so much better!

How do you make guacamole taste better?

Guacamole tastes best when you use the freshest ingredients you can find. Fresh garlic, cilantro, serrano peppers, and onions are far superior to using dried herbs. You’ll have the best guacamole dip when you stick to fresh!

What to Serve with Guacamole (Side Dishes)

If you’re having guacamole as a snack, you need tortilla chips. But you can also serve it with your favorite Mexican dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. Guacamole is additionally an amazing sandwich condiment to kick up your typical lunch with a Mexican flavor.

Other Ways to Use Guacamole

If everyone is all taco-ed out, you can use that leftover guacamole on toast for avocado toast. Use it to make deviled eggs, serve with fried fish, dunk fries into it, make nachos the next day…there are seriously so many yummy ways to enjoy this fresh guacamole that you should have no problem using it all.

Should guacamole have tomatoes?

While there are many recipes that don’t include tomatoes, this guac recipe uses them. It’s a small amount and adds more nutrition and flavor to your meal.

What can I substitute for lime juice in guacamole?

No lime? No problem! In this healthy guacamole recipe, you can substitute lemon juice or vinegar for lime juice. Lemon is a bit preferred over vinegar but at least you have options for adding the acidity you need to balance out the flavor.

No, guacamole involves more than simply smashing an avocado. You need to add pungent elements like garlic and onions, fresh herbs, and a bit of acidity to make it the authentic way.

Is avocado spread and guacamole the same thing?

No, they’re not the same at all. Avocado spread is plain with just a little spice and citrus juice or vinegar to keep it from browning. Guacamole is distinctive with fresh herbs and other vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and peppers.

What’s the difference between avocado dip and guacamole?

The difference is that avocado dip is merely mashed avocados while guacamole’s base is of avocados combined with garlic, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and fresh herbs and spices with citrus juice to prevent it from changing to an unsavory color.

How to Store Guacamole

Even when you add lime, you will get some browning if you store any leftover guacamole in your fridge. It is better to use a piece of plastic wrap actually pressed over the guacamole to remove all air trapped inside.

Or you can use an airtight container and smooth the guac over at the top to get rid of any air pockets in side as well. Then add just half an inch of water to cover the surface of your guacamole. Make sure it’s covered tightly and then pop it in the fridge, but be sure you eat it within 2 days.

How do you keep guacamole from getting brown?

Avocados naturally brown when exposed to air. You can’t stop it but you can slow it down using lime juice. If you can’t find lime juice, lemon juice works well too. Also, cover your guacamole with a think layer of plastic wrap actually touching the guacamole so no air is in between and seal off all the edges. These simple tricks will keep your guacamole green much longer!
