  • Water – To help get the consistency just right.

  • Lift the whisk above the bowl and if it drizzles down within 8 to 10 seconds and smooths into the rest of the icing below, it’s ready.

Expert Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Sugar Cookie Icing Recipe

  • Choose your consistency. Royal icing can be made to have different types of consistency. Medium-stiff is best for piping detailing on while flood is thinner, ideal for filling the base.
  • Add the water slowly when thinning. After you beat the ingredients of your sugar cookie frosting recipe together, you can adjust the consistency as needed by slowly adding in more water.
  • Always let flood icing dry first. If you’re using it as a base, it will smear and become messy if you don’t let it set before you add your details.
  • Decorate as you wish! When making royal icing for sugar cookies, you don’t need to perfectly pipe intricate details on if you’re a beginner. Start with a flood base and sprinkles and work your way up. It takes practice to make them like a bakery does!
  • No corn syrup. I always prefer to make sugar cookie icing without corn syrup.

How do you make macarons from scratch

Easy Macaron Recipe

Macarons have such a dainty texture and pretty presentation that you’d think you’d need to be a full-fledged baker to make them. But this easy macaron recipe ensures that even if you’ve never baked before, you’ll get it right!

Tips and tricks for the perfect macarons

  • After that, the cream of tartar goes in and then gradually, the granulated sugar, followed by the food coloring and vanilla extract.

Stiff peaks will form and then you can put the dry ingredients in folding gently. The result is something that will resemble wet sand. Place this in a piping bag and pipe it onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let them sit for a bit then bake.

Ingredients

  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 1/2 cups almond flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
Macaron Buttercream Filling
  • 1 cup butter unsalted and softened
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • salt pinch

Method

  1. First, make sure the almond flour is ultra-fine. You can accomplish this by sifting into a food processor, pulsing a few times, then sifting again into a bowl. Sift the confectioner’s sugar into the same large bowl. Then, add the room temperature egg whites into a bowl and whisk with a hand mixer on medium speed. Once the egg whites begin to foam, add in the cream of tartar and gradually add into the granulated sugar. Then add in the food coloring and vanilla. Beat the mixture until stiff peaks form. Once the stiff peaks have formed, begin folding in the dry ingredients gently, 1/3 at a time. The final mixture should look like wet sand. Alternatively if you can form a figure eight with the mixture without it breaking the mixture is ready.
  2. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, gluing down the four corners with dabs of the batter. Pipe one inch discs onto the baking sheet. Tap on the counter to release air bubbles, and allow to sit for 40 minutes. Once the discs have developed a skin, they are ready to be placed in the oven. Bake at 300F for 12-15 minutes.
  3. While the macarons cool, make the buttercream filling. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with a hand mixer for about 2 minutes or until creamy. Add the confectioner’s sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract and continue to beat for about 2-3 minutes. Add a pinch of salt if needed.
  4. Add the macaron buttercream filling into a piping bag and pipe into the center of each macaron and cover with another macaron side to complete the dessert. Enjoy!

  • Creamy peanut butter – A creamy texture makes it easier to mix into the dough. Skippy or Jif works great for chewy peanut butter cookies.
  • All-purpose flour – The natural choice for baking cookies (can use gluten-free!).
  • Baking soda and baking powder– Gives your peanut butter cookies more lift (you can use gluten-free baking powder too).
  • Unsalted butter – Soften it first, and choose unsalted because peanut butter is a bit salty on its own, plus you’ll add a pinch of salt to the dough too.
  • Sugar – A combination of granulated and brown sugars gives balance in sweetness and caramelized flavors.
  • Egg – Binds it all together.

Snickerdoodles are very similar to sugar cookies but the key difference is the cream of tartar that gives it that special tangy flavor.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Take the cookie dough from the refrigerator and allow to sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. With a spoon or ice cream scoop, roll your cookie dough balls, about 1.5 tablespoons of cookie dough each.
  2. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the cookies are barely golden brown around the edges. If you like your chocolate chip cookies extra gooey, bake for 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.

All you need are some simple ingredients, usually powdered sugar, water, vanilla extract, and light corn syrup. To make sugar cookie icing follow the recipe below. You only need a spoon and a bowl to mix it together.

How do you make cookie frosting from scratch?

Take the ingredients and mix them together. Just powdered sugar, water, vanilla extract, and light corn syrup is all it takes. You can stir it all together and you’ll see it soon resemble frosting. If you want it to have different colors, you can use gel food coloring.

Separate some icing into individual dishes to add the coloring as you like. You can adjust the consistency with adding more powdered sugar or water, depending on if you want it thinner or thicker.

Making Icing for sugar cookies

Is cookie icing the same as royal icing?

Not exactly. While cookie icing can be used just like royal icing, it won’t dry with as hard a texture. I love using it for piping designs or flooding cookies with icing.

Is granulated sugar same as icing sugar?

No, it isn’t. Icing sugar goes by a couple different names like confectioners’ sugar or powdered sugar. It has a finely ground texture to it that you need for making icing. If all you have is granulated sugar, you can use your food processor to get it to that fine texture. However, I think it will be faster if you go to the store and get the right kind of sugar.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter unsalted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
Icing recipe
  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp light corn syrup
  • 2 1/2 tbsp water room temperature
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method

  1. If making your own Icing, start here first. For the Icing, mix all ingredients together until you achieve a silky smooth consistency. Add a few drops of food dye to achieve desired color (optional). Set icing aside and start on the cookies.
  2. For The Cookies: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. When you measure out the flour do not pack it into the measuring cup to avoid using too much flour.
  3. In another large bowl, beat the butter and sugar with a hand mixer for 5 minutes or until light and fluffy then add the egg and mix until thoroughly combined.
  4. Mix in the flour mixture into the wet ingredients with a spatula until just combined.
  5. Roll the sugar cookie dough into about 1 1/2 tablespoon dough balls and place them on your prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper evenly spaced apart. Bake cookies on the cookie sheet until just golden brown for 10-12 minutes at 350 F.
  6. Let those perfect cookies cool before spreading your icing and sprinkles on top. Spread your icing no more than 1/4-inch thick on top, add your favorite sprinkles and enjoy!
  7. Cover left over cookie dough with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator until you're ready to bake.

This recipe takes the old original Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe and gives it a much needed update! With this recipe, you’ll notice I’ve included more brown sugar vs white sugar. These are difficult to resist.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 oz bittersweet chocolate (or chocolate chips) coarsely chopped
  • 3 oz baker's white chocolate (or chocolate chips) coarsely chopped
  • 3 oz walnuts coarsely chopped

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375F.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda and set aside. I do not typically recommend using a stand mixer for this recipe as you can easily overmix which can change the texture of your cookies.
  3. Cook 1 stick of butter in large saucepan over medium heat stirring often and scraping the bottom of the pan until the melted butter browns, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a large heatproof bowl.
  4. Cut the remaining stick of butter into pieces and add to the browned butter (it should melt, but not sizzle). Once the butter is melted, add in the sugars and whisk until no lumps remain and then add in the eggs and egg yolks. Add the vanilla then fold in the dry ingredients into the butter mixture (wet ingredients).. Add the white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts and fold together.
  5. Refrigerate the mixture for 1 hour. Using a spoon or ice cream scoop, portion out 24 balls of dough of about the size of a golf ball and place on rimmed baking sheets. If you refrigerate the cookies dough overnight, let your cookie dough sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before rolling into dough balls. For easy clean up, line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Bake the cookies and rotate if necessary. Allow the cookies to bake at 375F until deep golden brown, about 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheets and then serve.
